« Bâtissons l’Hamilton de l’avenir! »

C’est autour de ce thème que les francophones des Hamilton se sont rassemblés pour discuter des enjeux de la communauté.

Pascale Marchand fût l’invitée spéciale de ce premier diner-réseautage, organisé par l'ACFO régionale Hamilton, et animé par Rudy Chabannes, rédacteur en chef d’ONFR+. Les sujets de la gouvernance municipale, l’intersectionnalité, le colonialisme et comment la communauté peut contribuer au développement de la ville ont été abordé.

“Building the Hamilton of the Future!”

It was around this theme that Hamilton’s francophone community came together to discuss the issues and challenges facing them.

Pascale Marchand was the special guest of this first networking dinner, organized by the Hamilton region French Canadian Association of Ontario (ACFO), and hosted by Rudy Chabannes, editor-in-chief of ONFR+. The topics of municipal governance, intersectionality, colonialism, and how the community can contribute to the development of the city were discussed.

Pascale depends on her bicycle to get around Hamilton. While out riding, with her teenaged nephew in tow, a driver nearly hit them. The near-miss was caught on dash-cam. The incident left her shaken and worried about her nephew’s safety. It reaffirmed the need for safe and complete street infrastructure to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility device users.

This happened in the same month where a cyclist was killed by a driver while riding to work.

Pascale dépend de sa bicyclette pour se déplacer à Hamilton. Alors qu’elle roulait, avec son neveu adolescent derrière, un conducteur a failli les frapper. Le quasi-accident a été intercepté par une dashcam. L’incident l’a secouée et l’a inquiétée pour la sécurité de son neveu. Cela a réaffirmé la nécessité d’une infrastructure routière complète et sécuritaire pour protéger les piétons, les cyclistes et les utilisateurs d’appareils de mobilité.

Cela s’est produit le même mois où un cycliste a été tué par un conducteur alors qu’il se rendait au travail.

Heat islands are dangerous. They are spaces where there is no escape from the heat. It's worse in spaces with no greenery or shade.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real consequences of heat islands and can be fatal. Older folks and people with low-income are especially at risk. ACORN is advocating a maximum heat by-law for the City of Hamilton, and I support this. 

It's one thing to have access to cooling stations and free public swims. But what are folks supposed to do in the night?

One way to prevent heat islands is to incorporate Nature-based Solution (NbS) like bioswales and increasing the tree canopy. This helps to reduce the heat radiation from  the concrete, slow down the evaporation of water, and provide shade. Plus, it looks good!
